Samba Villas and Gili Eco Trust united to protect the coral reefs of the Gili Islands. First Biorock in front Samba Lounge.
You can find this amazing piece of Technology just a stone throw in front of Samba Lounge. We are so happy and proud that with the great support of Delphine Robbe, her organization Gili Eco Trust and her wonderful team of young talents another piece in a big puzzle of coral enrichment in Gili Trawangan is placed.
Hard and soft corals, sponges, tunicates, and bivalves are observed to grow on Biorock materials at extraordinary rates. Fish and lobster population growth in these structures is extraordinary, especially juvenile fish, and depends on the shape of Biorock structures, which can be made to provide an extraordinary density of hiding places.
The Biorock method was invented, developed, and patented by the German scientist Prof. Wolf Hilbertz and by the biologist Dr. Thomas J. Goreau The Biorock electrolytic process is happening between 2 metals (steel and titanium) receiving electricity (above 1.2 Volts) in sea water, resulting in a steel structure to grow solid limestone minerals and the other metal to slowly disintegrate. These currents are safe to humans and all marine organisms but accelerates the grows process. Damages reefs heal from physical damage at least 20 times faster, have up to 50 times higher survival rate from the most severe high temperature bleaching events, and show rates of new coral growth higher than any previously recorded data. In addition Biorock is strengthening reefs, avoid beach erosion and soften the destructive energy of waves. The open web design allows waves and current to pass without destabilizing the structure.
On the Gilies Biorocks are in use since 2004 and installations take place under cooperation between Gili Eco Trust and Global Coral Reef Alliance With Delphine as a certified Biorock designer in lead, over 100 Biorocks have been installed around the three Gilies.
New diving sites are grow, existing reefs enforce and eroded reefs recover.
Since many years Samba Villas is an active supporter of the Gili Eco Trust.
